One afternoon I was scrolling though different blogs I read and I came across a recipe for cold brewed coffee (on The Velvet Bird). All this past summer I drank iced coffee and on those really hot days I would sneak away for a while and drink it in the walk-in refrigerator :). Because the last thing I wanted working next to an oven was a steaming cup of coffee.
I had never heard of brewing coffee with cold water. I would just pour my coffee over ice. After reading about cold brewed coffee I found more articles praising cold brewed coffee and that some people only drink iced coffee if its cold brewed. I was intrigued. So I decided to make some, and oh man was it good. There was a HUGE difference. It's so good! I make this 2-3 times a week right before I go to bed. If you are a fan of coffee, try it!!
There are a couple different versions. My favorite right now is the pumpkin spice!
Cold Brewed Coffee
Makes 3 cups
2/3 cup coarse ground coffee
3 cups water
- Combine the coffee and water in a jar and stir. If you are making one of the variations, add those ingredients during this step. Cover and place in your refrigerator overnight. Room temperature would probably work as well.
- In the morning, pour the mixture into a french press and...press. Of course if you don't have a french press just use a fine mesh strainer.
- Add a splash of milk (any type, I like rice) and pour over ice.
Variations:
- Add 3 tbsp brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon for a cinnamon flavored iced coffee.
- Add 3 tbsp brown sugar and 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice. Finish with a splash of your favorite milk and you've got a pumpkin spiced iced latte!
